Informations for new network users

What do I need to access the internet?

You'll need a computer with standard network card, 100/10 Fast Ethernet or faster. It's usual equipment of almost every computer, except some netbooks and other small ones. You will also need a few meters of standard network cable with RJ45 plugs. Almost all dorms have one socket per person, except for ds3 and Alfa, which have less.

How should I register?

All computers in our network must use automatic configuration using DHCP. It is default configuration of newly installed operating systems, any changes should be needed only when different network required manual IP assignment. Newly connected computer gets temporary IP address, and every page in your browser redirects to registration page. You must fill the form, and read all the presented informations. Registration is automatic, doesn't need paper form and admin help. In case of registration problems, appropriate information is displayed about reasons and solutions.

What I should not do?

In our network it is forbidden to use peer to peer (p2p) software for file sharing. You should not connect any routers without the express consent of the administrator, but simple switches are ok. Impersonating other user's accounts, and disturbing normal network functioning will result in disconnection. Using deprecated Internet Explorer 6.0 browser, and outgoing SMTP email using port 25 is blocked. We also recommend updating your software often and keeping active antivirus protection, any network activity of viruses will cause disconnection.

Is wireless network available?

In some dorms there are access points that allows for wireless internet access. Preferred because of speed and reliability, however, is a wired connection. Wifi is available in ds3, ds6, ds7, ds8, ds12, ds13, ds14. Ds12 and ds7 is covered entirely, the other only the ground floor or learning rooms

What speed should I expect?

The network brought to a computer socket has a bandwidth of 100Mbit/s. Individual dorms are connected to each other with a bandwidth of at least 1 Gbit/s. Outside of these times of increased traffic downloads from the Internet should reach 10MB/s. In the evenings speed is limited, depending on type of traffic. Picture is worth a thousand words, so look at our YouTube speed test (05.2011, 06.2011) and a reference test page.

What other features can I use after registration?

In some dorms there is an electronic booking system operating that is based on the registration to the network. Reservation applies mainly to laundry, pool, gym. After changing the dorm you don't need to re-register.

Where can I get more information?
